　　It's easy to have an opinion of someone based mainly on his or her appearance. People like attractive men and women. We often look at good-looking people and think we know what they are like without even talking to them. I believe this is common practice for most people.

　　Even though it is human nature to make decisions about people according to their looks, this can create problems. For example, you might think an attractive person is more trustworthy than someone who is less attractive. In reality, though, that good-looking individual might use his or her looks to cheat you. Likewise, a company might hire people because of the way they look and then be disappointed to learn they are poor employees. The most important thing is how a person acts and thinks, not his or her appearance.

　　人们很容易根据一个人的外表来决定对他（她）的看法。大家都喜欢长相迷人的男性和女性。我们常常会盯着长得很好看的人，就自认为了解他们是什么样的人，即使我们并没有和他们交谈过。我认为这对大多数人而言都是很常见的做法。

　　虽然根据一个人的外表来评断他（她）是人的天性，但这种做法可能会产生问题。举例来说，你可能会觉得长相迷人的人比长得不太迷人的人来得可靠。但事实上，长得好看的人可能会利用外表来骗人。同样地，某家公司可能会因为人的长相而录用他们，之后却很失望地发现他们是表现很差劲的员工。一个人最重要的是他（她）的行为和想法，而不是外表。

　　We all know that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and we shouldn't base our opinions on someone or something simply on appearances. Looks can be deceiving.

　　There are several good reasons why you shouldn't judge people based on their appearance. One reason is that an attractive person can be as terrible as a less attractive person can. A person's appearance is not a reflection of their personality and integrity. If you form your opinions about people merely based on their looks, you are likely to make many mistakes about their character. For all these reasons, the best approach is to look past superficial appearances and focus on what's inside the person instead.

　　以下有几个很好的理由可以告诉我们为什么不该以貌取人。其中一个理由是长相迷人的人和长得不太迷人的人都同样可能是很糟糕的人。一个人的外表并不能反映出他们的个性和正直操守。如果你光用外表来评断一个人，很可能会对他们的个性做出许多错误的判断。基于以上理由，最好的方法就是不要只看一个人的外表，反而要着重于他（她）的内在。
