格列佛游记——雄鸡与狐狸-1

Long, long ago, in a small house near the woods there lived a poor old woman. She had a few chickens. There was a very handsome rooster among them. His name was Chanticleer. His comb was as red as fire, and his feathers were as yellow as gold. He was proud of his crow. He thought, "I'm the king of all the chickens."

　　One night Chanticleer was sleeping by his wife in the chicken coop. Suddenly he began to moan in his sleep. His wife woke up and looked at him.

　　"Chanticleer! Oh, Chanticleer! What's the matter with you?"

　　Chanticleer woke up and said, "Oh, my dear, I have had a terrible dream." He continued, "I was looking for food in the yard. I saw a strange animal behind me. It looked like a dog, but it wasn't a dog. His fur was yellowish-red. He had a long tail and a sharp nose. His eyes glowed like fire."

　　"Nonsense!" said Mrs. Chanticleer in a mild voice. "Bad dreams come of overeating." Chanticleer said, "Dreams often foretell many important things."

　　But his wife didn't believe his words. "Oh! That's foolish. Be quiet and go back to sleep," said his wife.

　　"Yes, my dear," answered Chanticleer. They slept peacefully again.

　　The next morning, Chanticleer got up and flew down from his perch. He walked up to the barnyard in a royal way. He jumped up onto the fence and crowed, "Cock-a-doodle-doo, Cock-a-doodle-doo. Time for work and breakfast."

　　All the hens came down from their perches, and began to look for their food. Chanticleer walked up and down.

　　His red comb was standing up like a king's crown. When he found some insects, he gave them to the hens.

　　Soon the sun rose higher and higher. He stopped looking for insects and went to the pond at the end of the garden fence. There he took a bath. It was cool and pleasant.

　　很久很久以前，在树林附近的一间小屋里，住着一位贫穷的老婆婆。她饲养了几只鸡。其中有只雄纠纠的公鸡名叫强啼克利尔。他的鸡冠鲜红似火，羽毛橙黄如金。他对自己的啼声引以为傲。他想：『我是鸡中之王。』

　　一天夜晚，强啼克利尔在鸡舍中与妻子共眠。突然他在睡梦中开始呻吟。他的妻子醒来注视着他。

　　『强啼克利尔！噢，强啼克利尔！你怎幺了？』

　　强啼克利尔醒来后说：『噢！亲爱的，我作了一个恶梦。』他接着说：『我梦见在院子里找寻食物时，看见我背后有一只奇怪的动物。它看起来像只狗，但并不是狗。它的毛皮红里透黄，尾巴长长的，鼻子尖尖的。他的双眼闪亮如火。』

　　他妻子温和地说：『胡说！吃得太饱才会作恶梦。』强啼克利尔说：『梦常常会预示许多重大的事。』

　　但他妻子不相信他的话，并且说：『噢！这种说法实在可笑。安静地睡吧。』

　　强啼克利尔回答说：『好吧，亲爱的。』他们俩便又安然入眠。

　　隔天早晨，强啼克利尔起床后，从栖息的地方飞下来，昂首阔步地走到谷仓空地那里。他跳上篱笆，啼叫着：『喔──喔──喔──，喔──喔──喔──。工作及早餐的时间到了。』

　　于是所有的母鸡都从栖息处走出来觅食。强啼克利尔则走来走去。

　　他的红冠竖立起来，很像国王的皇冠。他找到昆虫时，便分给母鸡们去吃。

　　不久，太阳爬得越来越高。他不再找寻昆虫，而走到花园篱笆尽头的池塘那里。他在那儿洗了个澡，真是清凉又爽快。
