When most Americans think of yogurt, they think of those dessert-like concoctions with sugary fruit at the bottom. It’s true that yogurt is a healthy food packed with protein, but syrupy, fruity versions tend to counteract the benefits of plain yogurt.
Have you ever tried plain yogurt? It might take some getting used to, but it’s worth it. It’s a perfect substitute for sour cream on baked potatoes and tacos or in salad dressings and other recipes. Yogurt contains only 140 calories and 7. . .4 grams of fat per cup, sour cream nearly 8. 00 calories and 48. grams of fat. Lowfat yogurt further cuts fat to 3.5 grams per cup, and no-fat yogurt brings it down to zero.
As for yogurt as a dessert, you can find lowfat, sugar-free versions in the dairy section of the supermarket. Better yet, be creative and make your own fruit/yogurt combinations.
Try this: Mix together one cup of low-fat or no-fat yogurt, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 package of artificial sweetener. Slice and chop a large apple, stir it into the yogurt mix and — voila! — you have a darned good fruit salad containing the same number of calories as pre-prepared yogurt and fruit. Tomorrow try a banana or a peach. Or mix a bunch of fruits together for a feast of a meal that still has far fewer calories than a burger and fries.
