There is an exception to what we just said: Seeds that come with shells intact, like those sunflowers we just mentioned, are great to chew on, slowing down your eating in the process. Chew on one seed at a time, softening the shell in your mouth for a while, then carefully break it into neat halves. Remove the shell from your mouth and chew the seed or, if you prefer, swallow the shell along with the seed. The shell won’t hurt you — it’s good roughage that will improve your digestion.
